Not only is the month of February home to the most romantic day of the year, Valentine's Day, but it is also one of the sweetest months of the year.   • Chocolate and Fat: Chocolate contributes less than 2% of the fat in the American diet. Stearic acid, a fat component that makes up 1/3 of the fat in chocolate, does not raise blood cholesterol. Oleic acid makes up another 1/3 of the fat in chocolate. This fat has been shown to be beneficial to heart health.

  • Chocolate is lower in caffeine than tea, coffee and cola. A one-ounce bar of chocolate contains about 6mg of caffeine, whereas a five-ounce cup of regular coffee contains over 40mg.

  • Chocolate is a natural form of anti-depressant. It produces serotonin, a chemical that elevates the mood.

  • Chocolate, especially the dark variety, is rich in antioxidants, which reduce the risk of heart disease and cancer. Chocolate also has copper, iron, zinc and magnesium -nutrients essential to the body.

So…the next time you eat chocolate, don’t feel guilty. Chocolate (in moderation) may contribute to a healthy diet!

Was the cheeseburger all a big mistake?

Many great inventions have been discovered by accident. That's what they are saying about one of the most popular dishes of all time, the cheeseburger.

As the story goes, in 1924 a 16 year old Lionel Sternberger working at his dad's Rite Spot restaurant in Pasadena, California, accidentally burned one side of a hamburger. Rather than throw it in the trash, he flipped it over, put a piece of cheese on it to hide his mistake and served it to a customer who was delighted to have it. The senior Sternberger put the new "cheese hamburger" on their menu, calling it the "Aristocratic Hamburger." It sold for 15 cents.
